10 Years of Saving Senior Pets!

A Decade Dedicated to Senior Pets

Director & Founder,
Dawn Kemper, and Young at Heart's 1st rescue dog, Peaches.

Young at Heart is celebrating 10 years of saving senior pets! It's amazing to think that 10 years ago, Young at Heart began with an idea that was considered crazy and impossible by many in the animal shelter industry back then. We were told by many that what we wanted to do - rescue and adopt out only senior pets - was impossible. Nobody would support us. Nobody would foster for us. Nobody would adopt senior pets. It was financial suicide. Well, aren't you glad that they were all wrong?! We are! And so are the hundreds of senior dogs and cats that got a second chance in the twilight of their lives. And that's because YOU believed in our idea, our mission, and YOU helped make it possible!

Founded in 2005 in direct response to the need for a safe haven for senior dogs and cats in the Chicago area, our lives here at Young at Heart have been touched by hundreds of beautiful old souls that simply needed someone to see past the grey on their muzzle or the age on their cage card. The journey has been amazing so far, and we have had the privilege of sharing our lives with such amazing senior dogs and cats, and such amazing people that have become a part of the Young at Heart family. There are hard days, that is for sure. But the beautiful days where we are saving lives, you are sending us love, and our family is growing because another wonderful person brought a senior pet into their family far outnumber those hard days!

We have big plans for this 10th year at Young at Heart, and the next 10 years to make a bigger impact for senior pets in need. We look forward to finally building our Home Away from Home for the senior pets that need us, meeting new friends that believe senior pets deserve a second chance like we do, and saving so many more wonderful older pets waiting in shelters for our help. We have a lot of work to do to save even more lives, and we are so excited to do it!

Thank you to all of our friends that have made these past 10 years possible! We look forward to sharing the next 10 years with you!
